The Algemene Bevrijdings- en Ontwikkelingspartij (ABOP) is a political party founded in 1990 in Suriname . It has its party headquarters in Paramaribo at Verlengde Keizerstraat 20.

history

On February 11, 1990, at a special party conference, Petrus Domini was elected as the first chairman of ABOP. The first vice-chairman was G. Leidsman, the secretary I. Deel and the first treasurer was R. Pansa. Her program was aimed primarily at the inhabitants of the inland, the marrons .

In 1996 Ronnie Brunswijk became a member of the party and was appointed second treasurer on the board. Not much later, he was elected chairman of a general party congress.

elections

The ABOP participated for the first time in the elections to the National Assembly of Suriname (DNA) in 1991 without success. As a participant in the elections in 2000, she was again unsuccessful.

2005 elections

In the elections on May 25, 2005 , the party decided to participate in the elections as an A-Combinatie together with the Broederschap en Eenheid in de Politiek (BEP) and Seeka parties . This alliance was successful and won five parliamentary seats. Here Brunswijk in the Marowijne district was elected as the first member of parliament for the ABOP.

After the elections, the A-Combinatie entered into a government coalition with the Nieuw Front and the Democratisch Alternatief 91 (DA 91). In the Venetiaan cabinet , the head of the ABOP's scientific office, Alice Amafo, was given the first ministerial post for this party.

2010 elections

In the elections on May 25, 2010 , ABOP also took part in the A-Combinatie . Of the seven seats taken, three were from the ABOP candidates.

After the elections, the A-Combinatie u. a. a coalition with the Mega Combinatie with the NDP as the main actors and the chairman Desi Bouterse , the former military opponent of the re-elected Brunswijk. In this coalition, the ABOP provided three ministers and the vice-president with Robert Ameerali .

2015 elections

In the elections on May 25, 2015 , ABOP participated as an alternative combination , this time with two other partners. For the first time, ABOP presented candidates in all ten districts. Of the five seats in parliament, all of them went to the ABOP, which appeared as opposition politicians in this legislative period. In terms of the number of votes, the ABOP had become the third largest party in Suriname.

2020 elections

Since 2019 it has been forbidden by law to participate in parliamentary elections in a party alliance. However, there were agreements between u. a. three parties that the candidate Paul Abena from the Seeka party on the ABOP list and one ABOP candidate, Miquella Soemar-Huur on the Pertjaja Luhur list , should participate in the elections on May 25, 2020 .

The ABOP won eight seats in the elections with an additional seat for Miquella Soemar-Huur, who received the most votes from all candidates on the list of Pertjaja Luhur in the Wanica district .
