Deshaker is software that stabilizes shaky videos . It is implemented as a plug-in for the open source video editing program VirtualDub . Deshaker is available free of charge as freeware .

function

Deshaker analyzes a video for unwanted camera movements (blurring). The individual images are positioned in such a way that the motif seems to stand still. If you let the video run like this, the edge of the image is not in the same position for any image. Then the image section is determined that occurs in all individual images. If this image section is used from every single image, you get a blurred video with reduced image size; however, the actual resolution remains the same.

Most of the time, however, it is necessary to output the video in its original size and resolution. Deshaker supports various options for this:

  • The reduced (cropped) image size video is scaled up to the desired image size . However, the change in resolution results in a loss of quality in the form of blurring.
  • The cut-off areas of individual images are replaced by the corresponding areas of the previous or subsequent images. However, this only works if there is no movement in these areas of the image.

Limits

Basically, the subsequent removal of blurring always leads to a poorer quality than a video that was not blurred from the start.

Reasons:

  • If the camera shakes quickly , every single image already shows motion blur . Although the tremor is removed by Deshaker, the blurring remains. This effect can largely be avoided if Deshaker is used in combination with a camera with optical image stabilization . Then the optical image stabilization compensates for the fast but short trembling movement, while Deshaker removes the slower and longer movements of the camera.
  • It is difficult for Deshaker to distinguish desired camera movements such as zooms and pans from unwanted camera movements. Deshaker offers numerous setting options for this, however, using them requires some experience.

Alternatives

There are several commercial alternatives to Deshaker, the most famous being Dynapel SteadyHand. Many commercial video editing systems contain comparable functions.
