Detention (pronounced Dett) is a rural municipality in the province of Matabeleland North in Zimbabwe . Dete has about 1,000 inhabitants.

Geographical location

Dete lies at an altitude of 1091 m above sea ​​level , between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls at the southeast end of the Hwange National Park , of which it is the lodge and hotel center.

Infrastructure

The place lives from tourism. It is located on the road from Bulawayo to Livingstone in Zambia and is a traditional stopover on the journey from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls . Hotels, campsites and B & B houses offer accommodation.

Dete has a train station on the Bulawayo – Victoria Falls railway line . The Shongololo Express , a South African hotel train , also stops here on its tours. On February 1, 2003, the serious railway accident at Dete occurred in the entrance to the station , in which up to 50 people died when a passenger train and an oncoming freight train collided head-on.

The management of Hwange National Park is based in Dete, as is the organization Painted Dog Conservation , where you can learn about the life and conservation measures of the endangered African wild dogs .

There is a primary school and a small hospital in the village .
