The German-British Yacht Club (DBYC) is a Berlin sailing club on the Havel , which was originally founded under a different name in 1947 by members of the British armed forces .

history

The eventful history of the German-British Yacht Club (DBYC) is closely linked to the history of (West) Berlin and began in 1947 with the founding of the United Forces Sailing Club in Berlin and the United Services Yacht Club. During the blockade of Berlin and the Allied Airlift , West Berlin was supplied with fuel by the Royal Air Force from the club area . Before the club premises landed Seaplanes the British protecting power for the supply of Berlin. The British Berlin Yacht Club (BBYC) was founded in 1952 . The first German members were accepted in 1970.

Terrorists from the June 2nd Movement carried out an explosive attack on the (then still) BBYC on February 2nd, 1972, in which the boat builder Erwin Beelitz died. To date, no culprit has been identified.

After 1989 it became clear that sooner or later the Allies would leave Berlin. In 1991 the German-British Yacht Club was founded within the BBYC with the intention of continuing the tradition of the BBYC with regard to international understanding and bi-nationality in the best sense of the word.
