The Franco-German European Campus Nancy , French Campus européen franco-allemand à Nancy (until 2009 Premier cycle franco-allemand or German-French basic studies ) is an integral part of the Grande école Sciences Po . It was founded in 2000 in Nancy as the first of six delocalized campuses .

history

The Franco-German campus in Nancy was founded in 2000 as the first of currently seven regional campuses. The initiative came from Richard Descoings , then director of the Institut d'études politiques de Paris , who during his time in this post was committed to internationalizing the educational institute. At the moment there are around 300 students studying at the Nancy campus, more than half of whom come from the international, mostly European region. This experience of internationality through cultural diversity during the first two years of study in Nancy is supplemented by a third year that must be completed abroad at one of the 470 partner universities of the Grande École.

The decision to found a Franco-German campus - and the first one at that - in Nancy was also a symbolic one: It emphasized the importance of Franco-German relations as the “engine” of European integration. Located in the immediate vicinity of Germany and Luxembourg and only one and a half hours by train from Paris, Nancy can be described as a city open to Europe and international space. The architectural ensemble around Stanislas Square, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the École de Nancy , pioneer of French Art Nouveau , are particularly well known. The campus itself is in one of the XVIII. Century building, the former "Hôtel des Missions Royales".

Education

The course is designed for three years, two of which are completed in Nancy itself and one at one of Sciences Po Paris' 470 partner universities. The degree achieved by the students has the status of a Bachelor of Arts .

Training at the Nancy campus and at Sciences Po Paris in general is characterized by a multidisciplinary approach to the humanities and social sciences, complemented by subjects in the arts and additional courses, for example in mathematics. A special focus is on the investigation of political, economic and social challenges that the European Union is currently facing from a Franco-German perspective. The languages of instruction are French, German and English.

The tuition fees - depending on the income of the parents - are between 0 and 9800 €, but are increased annually. Bachelor graduates on all seven Sciences Po campuses have the opportunity to enroll for a master’s degree at the Paris headquarters ( see Sciences Po ), but can also switch to other universities for their further studies.

The Campus de Nancy offers double bachelor programs with the Free University of Berlin and with the University College London .

A three year program

The first year of study aims to develop different methodologies as well as an introduction to the major disciplines on which the training is based (law, political science, history, economics, sociology and philosophy). The offer is supplemented by artistic studios.

In the course of the second year of study , the students have to decide on a transdisciplinary specialization, a so-called "majeure" and have the following three options to choose from:

  • Economy and society (focus on economy and sociology)
  • Political humanities (focus on philosophy and history)
  • Politics and Governments (focus on law and political science)

The third year of study must be completed abroad. The two options available to students are, on the one hand, a full academic year at a partner university, or, on the other hand, a “hybrid” year with a study and a practical semester.

Associative offer

The relatively small number of students allows a high degree of involvement in the associative life of the campus. This enables participation in many different artistic, sporting and social projects that are managed and organized by the second year students. Several times a year, sporting and artistic meetings are organized between the regional campuses, each of which takes place at one of the eight locations. These meetings also include the so-called "Collégiades", a sports and theater competition that takes place on another campus and is also organized by the students. In this context, over 1000 students from the university campus come together once a year for five days.

The "parcours civique"

One of the special features of studying at the Grande École Sciences Po in general is the so-called “parcours civique”, which literally means “the civil parcours”. It is a mandatory civil engagement project. In the course of the first year of study, this should be developed and presented in a “Lettre d'engagement”, a “letter of engagement”. During the second year of study, the students are then obliged to work in a civil project in the area of the fields they have predefined. The students are involved in both national and local organizations and also have the opportunity to develop their own projects.

admission

The recording is selective and takes place via three different methods. The international procédure is open to students who have completed their higher education entrance qualification outside France and / or a degree other than the French Baccalauréat . The application is initially made from a dossier consisting of grades from the last two years, letters of assessment from teachers and letters of motivation. If the dossier as admissible (German: approvable) classified, so you are invited to a job interview. The interviews are offered worldwide. Students who have a French Baccalauréat apply via the examen d'entrée (also incorrectly referred to as concours ), a written entrance examination in four subject areas. If they pass this, they will be invited to an interview. Admission is based on these two exams. Another procedure is the Convention d'éducation prioritaire for French students who have completed their Baccalauréat in a problem area. Here, too, the application runs through a dossier and an interview.
