The German Actuarial Association e. V. ( DAV ) is the professional representation of insurance , building society and finance mathematicians who work as actuaries in Germany and is based in Cologne . Mathematician and manager Guido Bader has been chairman since 2019. Michael Steinmetz is the main managing director. Birgit Kaiser and Hennig Wergen are the managing directors.

history

In the German Association for Insurance Science e. V. constituted the “Insurance Mathematics Department” on April 4, 1903 in Berlin. In 1935 the German Actuarial Association was founded in Berlin. 13 years later, on October 18, 1948, the German Society for Insurance Mathematics (DGVM) was founded in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. In 1951 the DGVM and the German Actuarial Association merged to form the German Society for Insurance Mathematics (Deutscher Aktuarverein). The German Actuarial Association was then deleted from the register of associations.

In 1980 the Society for Insurance Mathematics founded the IVS Institute of Actuarial Experts for Pensions eV with the task of dealing with the professional issues of actuarial mathematics, together with the Working Group for Company Pensions eV and the Association of Independent Freelance Insurance and Business Mathematicians in the Federal Republic of Germany To promote experts and to work for the public recognition of the profession.

With the implementation of the 1st and 3rd life insurance guidelines and the associated discontinuation of the regulatory approval of conditions and tariffs, the legislature introduced the institution of the responsible actuary in 1994 . The legislature expressed the expectation that the establishment of a professional organization for the responsible actuaries in the medium to long term would create a comparable situation in Germany as in Great Britain. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Versicherungsmathematik took on this task during the ongoing legislative process. As a result, the German Actuarial Association (DAV) was founded on February 5, 1993 with its headquarters in Cologne. The entry in the register of associations at the Cologne District Court took place on April 14, 1993. Since then, the DAV and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Versicherungsmathematik, operating under the abbreviation DGVM since 1994, have been sister organizations. On April 26, 2002, the DGVM changed its name to the German Society for Insurance and Financial Mathematics (DGVFM), thus documenting the extended areas of responsibility of the association in its name.

In order to meet the changing requirements for actuaries, the German Actuarial Association founded the CERA Global Association in 2010 together with numerous other national actuarial associations, which organizes the training for Certified Enterprise Risk Actuary.

According to its own information, there are over 5,350 members organized in the association (as of April 19, 2019), and there are currently around 1,600 actuaries and financial mathematicians in the regulated training course to become actuaries.

The usual way to become a member of the German Actuarial Association is to take the basic and specialist exams. A degree in mathematics or a degree comparable to this as well as a corresponding professional experience are required.

Since January 1, 2018, the DAV has been offering a new structure for training to become a DAV actuary. The aim of the new training is to prepare the actuaries for the changed working environment due to Solvency II, increasing digitalization and the new challenges of risk management. In addition, the international comparability and recognition of German training is simplified. The DAV's new examination system is divided into two levels: first six subjects in basic knowledge and then four subjects in specialist knowledge.

Basic knowledge:

  • Economic and legal environment
  • Applied stochastics
  • Financial math and risk assessment
  • Actuarial
  • Modeling and ERM
  • Corporate management

Special knowledge:

  • Life insurance
  • Health insurance
  • pensions
  • Damage insurance
  • Investment
  • Home savings
  • Enterprise Risk Management
  • Actuarial Data Science

Members of foreign actuarial associations who work as actuaries in Germany can, upon application, be granted temporary associate membership. In addition, the General Assembly can appoint honorary members on the proposal of the Board of Directors. Representatives of foreign actuarial associations can be appointed "corresponding members" by a board resolution.

All members who are natural persons, with the exception of the "corresponding members", may use the designation "Actuary DAV".

statute

The goals of the articles of association include ensuring the qualifications of actuaries based on a uniform professional profile and adequate professional standards as well as representing the interests of actuaries.

Another concern formulated in the statutes is the promotion of the European commonality of the actuarial profession. For this purpose, the association is a member of the European Actuarial Association and the International Actuarial Association (IAA).

The DAV strives for a close connection to the German Society for Insurance and Financial Mathematics . V. (DGVFM). Members of the DAV can become members of the DGVFM without a special admission procedure and without a declaration of membership.

The organs of the DAV are the board of directors and the general assembly. The fiscal year is the calendar year.

GAUSS Prize

The DAV has been awarding the GAUSS Prize every year since 1998 together with the German Society for Insurance and Financial Mathematics (DGVFM) . This is awarded for current practice-relevant work in areas in which problems and tasks of actuarial science are discovered and dealt with in an appropriate manner. In addition, it is intended to motivate younger actuaries and insurance and finance mathematicians in particular to deal with unresolved issues in actuarial science. Two GAUSS young talent awards for 2018 went to Dr. Jan-Hendrik Weinert and Dr. Tobias Burkhart.
