German development aid for social housing and settlement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Development Aid for Social Housing and Settlement ( DESWOS for short ) is a denominational and politically independent, non-profit, non-governmental aid organization for development cooperation from Cologne . It was founded in 1969 by non-profit housing companies and their associations and received the statutory mandate to work on the basis of helping people to help themselves in eliminating the housing shortage of the poorest sections of the population in the countries of the Third World.

Fields of activity

The focus of the work is on so-called integrated projects, in which the creation of income through the establishment of jobs, training in particularly popular professions and the improvement of hygiene and health systems as well as social facilities are equally important. At the same time, DESWOS constantly tries to network its partners in order to spread the technical and social know-how gained through experience.

In addition, DESWOS, together with other organizations in the Association of Development Policy of German Non-Governmental Organizations eV (VENRO) and in the Habitat International Coalition (HIC), also critically examines the nature of current development policy and acts accordingly on the government agencies.

DESWOS bears the donation seal of the German Central Institute for Social Issues (DZI) in Berlin.

Members

DESWOS is supported by housing companies and their auditing and interest groups, which are organized in the GdW Federal Association of German Housing and Real Estate Companies . It is one of the development organizations in Germany with the largest number of members. According to the 2016 annual report, DESWOS has 861 corporate members who are largely part of the corporate housing industry and its suppliers and service providers. With their contributions, they finance the work of the DESWOS office and also enable them to finance and supervise their projects in developing countries through their own donations or donations raised from third parties. 243 private individuals are also members of DESWOS; they too are largely associated with the work of DESWOS from the housing industry.

DESWOS charges a minimum fee of 550 euros for corporate membership and 60 euros for private membership. The board decides on admission as a member.

Bodies

The general secretary of the organization is Gerhard Müller, who works on a voluntary basis for DESWOS as a board member. Chairman of the administrative board is the president of the GdW Federal Association of German Housing and Real Estate Companies , Berlin, Axel Gedaschko .
