The German Society for Hematology and Medical Oncology e. V. ( DGHO ) is the German scientific medical society for the research and treatment of malignant diseases ( oncology ) and diseases of the blood ( hematology ). In oncology, the focus is on drug treatment (chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted drugs, transplantation, etc.) as part of holistic patient care. The majority of the approximately 3500 members are doctors and researchers working in hematology and internal oncology. The members also include oncology doctors from other specialties.
history
The DGHO was founded in 1937 as the German Hematological Society . In 1964 a West German re-establishment took place as the German Society for Hematology . It was given its current name in 1977 after solid tumors, in addition to blood diseases, became increasingly accessible to drug therapy. Her work includes the development and publication of medical guidelines and guidelines for continuing medical education in the field. The medical guidelines have been published on the “Onkopedia” Internet portal and updated regularly since 2009. Together with the patient version “My Onkopedia”, “Onkopedia Care” and the “Knowledge Database”, the guidelines are openly accessible to all doctors, but also to patients and interested parties.
activities
To ensure the quality of medical care for cancer patients, the association established a certification process for oncological centers in 2007.
The joint annual conference is organized together with the Austrian and Swiss specialist societies for hematology and medical oncology. Approx. 6200 experts took part in the 2019 annual conference in Berlin .
The association annually awards the Artur Pappenheim Prize for outstanding scientific achievements in hematology, the Vincenz Czerny Prize for outstanding scientific achievements in oncology, a doctoral award, and the Geriatric Oncology Award (alternating as a sponsorship and an honorary award ) together with the German Society for Geriatrics.

Onkopedia
Onkopedia is an Internet portal for guidelines and information on cancer ( oncology ) and diseases of the blood ( hematology ). The website was initiated in 2009 by the DGHO and is a joint project with the Austrian Society for Hematology and Oncology , the Swiss Society for Medical Oncology and the Swiss Society for Hematology . The texts contain recommendations for diagnosis and therapy based on evidence-based medicine and practical experience. The authors are appointed by the boards of the responsible scientific societies.
