International Reading Association

The International Reading Association (IRA) is an international non-profit organization that was created in 1956 to improve learning to read , facilitate dialogue about reading research, and encourage people to read. It is a global network of people and institutions that are committed to literacy around the world .

The organization, based in Newark , Delaware , USA , has over 60,000 members worldwide. Its president is Carrice Cummins of Louisiana Tech University and its director is Marcie Craig Post.

IRA targets

The IRA aims to achieve the following goals through the provision of resources, lobbying, volunteering and professional development:

  • Improving the quality of reading teaching
  • Dissemination of research results and information for reading
  • Promotion of lifelong motivation to read

German Society for Reading and Writing

The German Society for Reading and Writing (DGLS) is a section of the International Reading Association (IRA) with almost 100,000 members worldwide.

With more than 500 members, the DGLS has been campaigning for the promotion of written and linguistic culture and for the acquisition of written language, especially under difficult conditions, since 1968.

Teachers, didacticians, literary and linguists and psychologists stimulate research projects in the field of reading and writing, promote international contacts and organize conferences on key topics. School policy issues are also discussed.
