German Society for Parasitology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Society for Parasitology (DGP) is a German-speaking scientific society based in Frankfurt am Main . It brings together researchers who are active in zoology or botany , medicine (especially tropical medicine ), microbiology and hygiene , veterinary medicine , plant protection and pest control . In 2012 the association had around 550 members.

history

It was founded on September 26, 1960 at the Institute for Parasitology at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover. The reason for the establishment was at that time, as a professional society, to assert the need for parasitology professorships in the scientific, medical and veterinary university departments to be expanded. On October 10, 1961, the Parasitological Society of the GDR was founded analogously . The initially intended cross-border cooperation within Germany never really got going. On September 21, 1990, the merger of the two sister companies under the umbrella of the DGP was decided.

Structures

The purpose of the association is to make the importance of parasitoses and the activities of parasitologists better known. She initiates or supports professional cooperation, the exchange of experiences between Germany and abroad and the promotion of young academics.

A scientific conference is held every two years and continuously supports symposia and working meetings of its members. There are working groups for arachnology / entomology , ecology , diagnosis , ichthy- parasitology and drug development . At the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft , three main research programs have been set up so far (2012) due to the activities of the DGP.

Honors from the professional society

At the same time as its biennial conferences, the DGP awards three awards: (a) the Rudolf Leuckart Medal for services to parasitology, (b) the Karl Asmund Rudolphi Medal for outstanding scientific achievements by young scientists (max. 38 years) and (c) the Gerhard Piekarski Prize for a doctoral thesis in parasitology.
