The German war cemetery Cassino is a collective cemetery on the southern foothills of the Colle Marino , three kilometers north of Cassino . This is where the remains of 20,100 German soldiers rest, including 3,100 unknown persons who fell in the southern part of mainland Italy south of the Pescara - Terracina line during World War II .

The bones were recovered from small cemeteries and field graves in 1959 and 1960. The soldiers were killed in the fighting for the landing head in the Gulf of Salerno, in the retreat along the Adriatic coast and in the fighting for Cassino and in the battle for Monte Cassino .

The sculpture "Mourning and Consolation" is located in the cube-shaped entrance building. The grave fields are terraced and elliptical. On both sides of each stone cross there are names, rank, dates of birth and death for three dead persons. There is a wrought bronze cross eleven meters high on the hilltop.

The sculpture “Flame of Peace” was erected in 2012 as a symbol of reflection. Pope Paul VI donated consecrated lamps for the military cemeteries of all nations in the Cassino area.
