Laon-Bousson German War Cemetery

The German War Cemetery Bousson , also known as the Bousson War Cemetery , is a German war cemetery from the First World War in the municipality of Laon in the Aisne department in France. The majority of those buried in the cemetery are soldiers who died in the city's hospitals and were injured in various battles on the Chemin des Dames in 1917 and 1918.

The cemetery is one of the two German war cemeteries in Laon; the other is the Champ de manœuvre military cemetery .

location

The cemetery is located in the south of the city of Laon on Ruelle Morlot.

history

The cemetery was laid out by the Germans in 1917 to bury the soldiers who were killed that year during the (Second) Battle of the Aisne . Most of the people buried in the cemetery were killed in autumn 1917 in the Battle of Malmaison and in the following year 1918, during the German spring offensive , during the Third Battle of the Aisne and during the Allied counter-offensive .

After the armistice, the French state transferred the dead who were buried in makeshift cemeteries in the Laon area to this collective cemetery.

After initial maintenance measures in 1929, the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge took over the permanent care of the site as a place of remembrance from 1966 after the Second World War .

investment

2,653 dead are buried in individual graves at the Laon Bousson war cemetery. The grave sites were originally marked by wooden crosses; these were replaced in 1973 by metal crosses. The graves of the ten fallen Jews who were buried here were provided with a stone grave stele instead of a cross.
