The German School Shanghai (DSS) is one of the world's largest German schools abroad. It was awarded the “Excellent German School Abroad” seal of approval by German school authorities. At the two locations in Hongqiao and Yangpu, it currently offers around 1,250 children and young people German-language education, from kindergarten to high school. The DSS is organized as an all-day school. In addition to regular school lessons, there are additional subject-specific offers and numerous afternoon activities. The DSS is equipped with modern facilities such as sports fields, multifunctional sports hall, swimming pool, its own library and a fine arts center with theater, art and music rooms.

Learning under one roof

The DSS is an all-day school that offers German-language education from kindergarten to high school graduation.

Kindergarten (18 months to 6 years)

In the kindergarten, children between the ages of 18 months and 6 years or up to school enrollment are prepared for the requirements of a German primary school. In the context of the Berlin education program, educators pay attention to the targeted promotion of personal, social, technical and learning skills. German-speaking specialists work in all groups and are supported by a Chinese-speaking assistant.

Primary school (grades 1 to 4)

The primary school is an important link between kindergarten and secondary school. Classes are based on the school's own curricula, which are not based solely on the curricula of individual federal states. Different forms of learning such as individual and group work, daily and weekly plans, but also teacher-centered phases alternate and impart cognitive, social and methodological skills - individually tailored to the level of development of the children.

Secondary level I and II (grades 5 to 12)

The basic structure of the secondary level is an 8-year high school education path with a one-year orientation level in class 5. Classes are based on the school's own curricula, which have been approved by the Conference of Ministers of Education. Differentiation offers enable students of all types of school to teach together. After class 9 the secondary school certificate can be obtained and after class 10 the secondary school certificate. Grade 12 ends with the German International Abitur examination (DIA), which is recognized worldwide as a university entrance qualification. With the technical college (FOS) in the field of economics and administration, the Hongqiao location offers the possibility of attaining the general technical college entrance qualification in two further school years after completing the intermediate education.

history

In 1995, parents got together in a living room in Shanghai to enable their children to learn German. Lessons started with four students and two teachers. Today a non-profit association is responsible for the DSS. Since the campus opened in Pudong in 2007, the school has consisted of two locations - the German School Shanghai Hongqiao (DSSH) and the German School Shanghai Pudong (DSSP). In January 2020, the Pudong school community and the Lycée Français de Shanghai moved to a new campus in the Yangpu district. In addition to Hongqiao, the Yangpu (DSSY) site forms the second EuroCampus in Shanghai.

The DSS is recognized by the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs in the Federal Republic of Germany as a German school abroad. This means that all certificates and authorizations are equivalent to those of German public schools. All members of the school community work hand in hand and can actively participate in committees.

Awards

Since September 2012, the DSSH has been certified as a “ CertiLingua -Exzellenzlabel-Schule”, an additional qualification which, among other things, replaces language entrance exams at international universities. In the same year and again in 2015, the location also received the "MINT-friendly school" award.

After successfully completing the federal-state inspection (BLI) by the Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA) in 2012, the DSSH is allowed to bear the seal of approval for Excellent German Schools Abroad . The Pudong location received the award in March 2014. As part of the federal-state inspection 2.0 in October 2018, the DSSH was awarded the seal of approval again.

The school association

The German School Shanghai e. V. is a non-profit association with a non-profit orientation. As the managing body of the DSS, it ensures sustainable financing and, together with the school management, significantly determines the strategy and development of the two school locations. The honorary board consists of eight members who are elected by the school association - that is, parents and other members - at an annual general meeting. The elected board members cover the chairmanship, one deputy per location, cash management, secretary and project-related functions (such as finance and IT). In day-to-day business, two representatives represent the interests of the board of directors and support communication with school administrators and committees.
