The Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA) in the Federal Office of Administration (BVA) supports more than 1200 schools worldwide on behalf of the Foreign Office (AA), including 140 German schools abroad (DAS) and around 1100 schools that offer the German Language Diploma of the Conference of Ministers of Education . The task of the ZfA is to provide educational, personal and financial support for school work abroad. Fundamental decisions regarding school work abroad are made in the Federal-State Committee for School Work Abroad (BLASchA).

With their school offer, the German schools abroad address Germans around the world who are abroad for work and who want their children to receive a German school education. In addition, the facilities, which today are mainly conceived as meeting schools , offer children from host countries and other cultural groups the opportunity to familiarize themselves with Germany, its culture and language.

Globally recognized degrees according to international standards can be obtained at German schools abroad , such as B. the Abitur , the German International Abitur Examination (DIAP) and the Mixed Language International Baccalaureate (GIB).

With its work, the ZfA realizes the following goals of foreign cultural and educational policy in close coordination with the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs in 95 countries :

  • the encounter with the culture and society of the host country,
  • school care for German children abroad,
  • promoting the German language,
  • strengthening Germany as a study and business location.

The ZfA places the teachers sent abroad by the federal states and supports them in all matters of school management. Around 2,000 German teachers are currently working at the same time. The ZfA advises private and public schools (school association boards, school administrations and state partners abroad) on educational, economic and organizational matters. The advice is aimed at the schools exercising their own responsibility to increase their competitiveness in the international "education markets".

Together with the Goethe-Institut , the DAAD and the educational exchange service of the Standing Conference , the ZfA is a sponsor of the “Schools: Partners for the Future” initiative , which was launched in 2008 by the Federal Foreign Office.

In February 2014, the central office for schools abroad moved from Cologne to a state-owned property in Bonn, Husarenstrasse 32 (district Bonn-Castell ).

The ZfA should not be confused with the Central Office for Foreign Education , which is located at the KMK and supports the responsible ministries of the federal states in the recognition of foreign educational qualifications.
