The German School Taipei was founded in 1990 to offer children of German-speaking families in Taiwan an educational offer based on German curricula and standards.

Close cooperation with the British and French schools took place very early on . Resources were pooled and benefited from the larger common system of the European School in Taipei. With the establishment of the Taipei European School Foundation in 2002, a legal form was found in which school operations can be effectively organized and financed for all partners.

The three originally independent schools are now combined under the roof of the Taipei European School as the German Section, British Section and Section Francaise. In 2002 the system was expanded to include the high school section.

The German School Taipei offers a continuous course of education according to German standards up to the general university entrance qualification . Lessons take place in primary school up to grade 4 and in lower secondary level I up to grade 8 on the basis of German curricula. Their requirements are set in local terms through school curricula that are subject to the approval of the Conference of Ministers of Education.

In grades 9 and 10, in cooperation with the High School Section of the Taipei European School, students are taught according to both the British curriculum for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGSCE) at the University of Cambridge and German curricula. The lessons are partly in English and partly in German. The students take the British final exam for IGCSE and also the central German final exam for intermediate educational qualifications. This opens the way for them to the German upper level and international upper level programs.

In grades 11 and 12, in cooperation with the High School Section, the course is continued in English to become the International Baccalaureate (IB) with German as Language A, so that the pupils acquire the right to access German colleges and universities.

Children from the age of three are accepted into the kindergarten attached to the school and prepared for school according to modern pedagogical principles. After reaching the age of five, the children attend primary school as part of the flexible entrance level. In the beginning, an individualized program of lessons and basic support is offered for them. You will gradually develop the ability to participate in the full teaching program.

Self-organized and creative learning processes with a maximum of individual support alternating with teacher-supported lessons create important foundations for the children in the primary school years. In this way, they acquire all the prerequisites and the necessary knowledge that they need for their further school career. The focus is on the world in Germany, Austria and Switzerland . In addition, references to the living environment in Taiwan are made in a variety of ways.

The kindergarten and the primary school have been located in the Swire European Primary Campus on FuGuo Road since the beginning of the 2007/08 school year.

The learning methods acquired in primary school are continued and expanded in secondary school. After the orientation level in class 5, there are internally differentiated lessons at grammar school, secondary school and secondary school level with the corresponding learning materials.

The secondary school has been located on the Swire European Secondary Campus on Yangmingshan since 1998 in two new school buildings with first-class equipment.

The school is a German school abroad funded by the Federal Office of Administration - Central Office for Schools Abroad - in the network "German Schools Abroad" (DAS) and received the seal of approval "Excellent German School Abroad" from the Federal President in 2011 and 2017.

With the decision of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs on December 13, 2012, the German School Taipei is an "Recognized German School Abroad".
