The German University for Continuing Education (DUW) ( Berlin University for Professional Studies ) was founded in April 2008 and has been a state-recognized private university based in Berlin since then. Although she did not have the right to award doctorates , the competent Senate authority granted her the right to use the title university. The Free University of Berlin and the Stuttgart Klett Group / Deutsche Weiterbildungsgesellschaft mbH each held half as founding partners until April 2013 in its supporting company, the DUW Deutsche Universität für further education GmbH. DUW has been part of the Steinbeis University Berlin since May 2013 . The teaching and research profile of DUW is geared towards the field of academic further education for employed people.

history

The preparatory work for the establishment of the German University for Continuing Education (DUW) began in summer 2006. In September 2006, the governing mayor of Berlin , the chairman of the board of Ernst Klett AG and the president of the Free University presented the concept of the new university to the public in a joint press conference. The character of the facility as a "public private partnership" and the equal start-up financing of the project by the Free University and the Stuttgart Klett Group in the amount of € 5 million each were emphasized. The Klett Group's share of the financing should come from cash contributions for the start of program development and study operations, while that from Freie Universität should come from bringing in a building with a suitable infrastructure. The building in Berlin-Dahlem that was transferred to the sponsoring company for the headquarters of DUW was used by the FU's Institute of Ethnology up to this point and was extensively renovated after it moved. In 2012, DUW sold the Dahlem property and moved into a smaller, new headquarters in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. Due to the ongoing relative economic failure, the two founding shareholders decided in May 2013 to sell their shares as soon as possible for a symbolic euro to the Steinbeis University in Berlin. Since then, DUW has been a member of the globally active Steinbeis association.
