Special edition of the German weekly newspaper for the Netherlands and Belgium (1918)

The German weekly newspaper for the Netherlands was a newspaper published first in Haarlem , later in Amsterdam , which campaigned for the strengthening of German-Dutch relations. The first edition appeared on January 18, 1893 under the editor-in-chief of August Prell , a native of Bavaria who had entered the service of the colonial army in the Dutch East Indies and then settled in Amsterdam. The newspaper changed its name several times during his time as editor-in-chief, initially it was called Deutsche Wochenzeitung in the Netherlands , then from 1906 on Deutsche Wochenzeitung for the Netherlands and Belgium , until it was renamed the German weekly newspaper for the Netherlands in 1919 . It had 5-6,000 subscribers.

True to the concept, the Dutch lawyer, journalist and publicist Benno Jules Stokvis , whose mother was of German origin, was brought into the paper as an author in 1919 ; he remained connected to the newspaper until 1925. Prell was accused of being a German spy at the outbreak of the First World War , and then turned to the journalists' association Nederlandsche Journalistenkring . This exonerated him after an examination, whereupon he was rehabilitated. Prell continued to run the newspaper until his death in 1926, after which its management was taken over by his sons.

After the National Socialist seizure of power in Germany , the paper stood behind the new order and from 1935 employed the pro-German historian and philosopher Hendrik Krekel as an author, from whose contributions from 1936 to 1940 a selection was published as a book under the name “Politics and Soul of Holland” has been. After the occupation of the Netherlands, the press landscape there was turned upside down by the German occupiers, and the daily Deutsche Zeitung appeared in the Netherlands as early as June 1940, a competition that could be sure of an advantage over the rest of the domestic press. The German weekly newspaper for the Netherlands could no longer hold out and ceased publication in the spring of 1942. August Prell's son HFMW Prell received a 15-year professional ban from the Dutch press purge after the war.

  12. ^ René Vos: Niet voor publicatie. De legale Nederlandse pers tijdens de Duitse bezetting , Sijthoff, Amsterdam 1988, p. 63, footnote 59a. In the footnote, the year 1941 is obviously inadvertently given as the year of employment, but 1942 is correct, the year 1942 is given by Vos on p. 468, this is confirmed by the entry of the newspaper in the German National Library.
