The German Rollator Day took place for the first time from May to October 2012. 82 events with 5000 visitors were carried out in Germany. The aim was to de-stigmatize the use of rollators and to help rollator users to be more safe when using their walking frame and in traffic. In addition, driver safety training was offered on a specially developed rollator course, traffic safety checks for rollators brought along as well as information and education on the subject of rollators and mobility in old age. The series of events started on May 3, 2012 during the German Seniors' Day in Hamburg. It then toured Germany and ended on October 12, 2012 with the rollator day finale at the REHACARE trade fair .

Background information

There are around two million walkers in Germany today. According to expert estimates, up to 500,000 per year will be added in the future. Demographic change and the increasing mobility of older people are reflected in these figures. However, many rollator users have deficits when it comes to their safety when using their walking aid. For this reason, a rollator course was offered on every rollator day, on which the participants practiced cornering, sitting and getting up safely with the rollator, walking on uneven surfaces and overcoming obstacles such as curbs or steps under supervision. There were also road safety checks, in which z. B. Brakes and Bowden cables, screw connections and wheel suspensions as well as - if available - the light were checked. At the end, the graduates of the rollator course received a rollator driver's license and a safety seal of approval. The German Rollator Day is to be continued in 2013.
