Recogne-Bastogne German War Cemetery

The German military cemetery Recogne-Bastogne is located near the Belgian town of Bastogne near Recogne , south of the road to Foy . 6,807 German soldiers who died in World War II are buried there . At the entrance there is a chapel with a red sandstone tower. The military cemetery is under the care of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge .

Towards the end of the Second World War, the German side began the Ardennes Offensive in 1944 , which was brought to a standstill in the Bastogne area by the superior American forces. About 2,700 American and 3,000 German soldiers fell. On February 4, 1945, the construction of a collective cemetery began. From 1945 to 1946 the Americans transferred their dead to Henri-Chapelle to the American military cemetery there . The Belgian government began to transfer the German dead from the border area to the German military cemetery in Recogne-Bastogne. In 1950 the administration was transferred to the Volksbund.
