The German House Naruto ( English : Naruto German House ) is a museum in the city of Naruto , Tokushima Prefecture on the Japanese island of Shikoku .

history

The German House of the City of Naruto was opened in 1972 as a memorial to the German prisoner-of-war camp Bandō , which was located here during the First World War . Today's German House Naruto is a new building that was built to replace the previous building until 1993 due to a lack of space.

In addition to its function as a memorial, it was intended to serve as a base for the international exchange that was just emerging again at the time. Today it serves different purposes - it is a museum, archive and venue for German-Japanese and international events.

Next to the building is a bronze Beethoven statue. June 1, 2018 marked the 100th anniversary of the premiere of the Ninth Symphony in Japan, performed by the camp's choir and orchestra. June 1st is the “Day of the Ninth” in Naruto. The symphony is traditionally performed in Naruto on the first Sunday in June each year. Choirs from Japan, the USA, China and the twin city Lüneburg are now taking part in the fourth movement, Ode to Joy .

Another bronze statue was erected as a memorial to the former camp commandant Matsue Toyohisa .
