The German Institute for Animated Film e. V. ( DIAF ) deals with the maintenance and promotion of German animated films . The institute's archive is located at the Technical Collections Dresden , the association's headquarters are on Königstrasse in the Inner New Town of Dresden .

history

The association was founded on November 16, 1993 in Dresden. From 1955 to 1990 the DEFA studio for animated films produced here , which primarily produced films for children and family audiences, but also satires and artistic films for adults. After the studio was closed, the estate was handed over to the DIAF in trust by the Federal Archives . In addition to a film stock of around 2,000 film copies, the DIAF archives film material and documents, in particular from the field of East German animated films. The development and processing of the extensive estate of the DEFA studio took place in 2003 with the publication “Die Trick-Fabrik. DEFA Animated Films 1955–1990 ”received a first degree. In April 2002 the institute opened a permanent exhibition on the entire work of the DEFA studio for animated films in the technical collections of the city of Dresden with funding from federal funds as part of the “Culture in the New Lander” program.

tasks

After the extensive indexing to DEFA animation film, the targeted expansion of the collection to include all German animation film is planned. The primary fields of activity of the institute are archiving and associated conservation measures as well as scientific research - the institute organizes international conferences, most recently in 2005 together with the Society for Animation Studies. The institute itself does not offer any further training in film work, but it is a close cooperation partner of relevant workshops, such as B. the International Workshop for Animated Film at the Academy of Arts Krakow , Poland , led by Jerzy Kucia . The long-term goal of the DIAF is to create a far-reaching network for German animated film that brings together the relevant archiving, research, training and exploitation institutions. Through film presentations and exhibitions at home and abroad, as well as through publications, attempts are being made to familiarize the general public with German animated film.

Exhibitions

In April 2002 the institute opened the permanent exhibition “Contrasts and Variations” in the Technical Collections Dresden, which documents the film work of the DEFA studio for animated films with original exhibits. The former state studio, which existed in Dresden- Gorbitz from 1955 to 1990 and employed 250 people, produced more than 1500 films in all classic animation techniques.

In addition, there are alternating special exhibitions of current animation artists.
