Devlet Su İşleri , abbreviated to DSİ , is the state water authority of Turkey . The authority is responsible for drinking and industrial water , for generating electricity through hydropower , the use of water in agriculture , environmental protection and protection against floods . The official name of the authority is Devlet Su İşleri Genel Müdürlüğü ("General Directorate for Water Affairs of the State"). The abbreviation is DSİ. The water authority is affiliated with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

The water authority is a "General Directorate" ( Genel Müdürlüğü ) and is currently (2015) headed by Ali Rıza Diniz. Various organizational units with responsibilities for press, legal affairs, control and the specialist units for the individual areas of responsibility are subordinate to the General Management. The water authority is represented in the provinces by 26 “regional directorates”. Several provinces are combined into one "area" ( Bölge ).

history

The forerunner of the water authority was the Sular Fen Heyeti Müdürlüğü ("Directorate of the Water Technology Committee"), which was founded in 1925. After a great drought , the Sular Umum Müdürlüğü (“General Directorate for Water”) was founded in 1929 . In 1939 the Su İşleri Reisliği (“Presidium for Water Matters”) was founded. It was affiliated with the Ministry of Public Affairs. In 1954 the water authority was given more authority and renamed Devlet Su İşleri Umum Müdürlüğü . The water authority has been affiliated with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry since 2007.
