Dhenkanal was a princely state of British India in what is now the state of Odisha . It was founded around 1530 by a Khurda Rajput and was a British protectorate from the beginning of the 19th century until 1947 . Dhenkanal had in 1941 an area of 3789 km² and 324,000 inhabitants.
Raja Shankar Pratap Singh (1918–56) joined the Eastern States Union in August 1947 . On January 1, 1948, this union was dissolved and Dhenkanal Orissa ( Odisha ) and thus India incorporated. On November 1, 1956, all princely states were dissolved. The Raja, who had belonged to the Indian Chamber of Commerce from 1929-46 , went into politics and was a member of the Orissa Parliament from 1957-61 and of the Upper House of India from 1964-65 .
