Dichagyris signifera , sometimes alsoto be foundin the literature under the name Yigoga signifera , is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 34 to 40 millimeters. The primary color of the forewing upper side is ocher-yellow to matt gray-brown tones. Ring, kidney and cone flaws are lightly filled and outlined in black. A black root welt extends to the cone blemishes. The upper side of the hind wing shimmers silky white in the males and light gray in the females.
Caterpillar
Fully grown caterpillars are light yellow-gray to greenish in color, strongly grayish, have a fine, light topline as well as broader, wavy side ridge lines, from which short blackish longitudinal lines, widely separated from each other, emerge downwards. The light side stripe is darkly shaded upwards. Two black arched lines stand out on the yellow-brown head.
Similar species
Dichagyris orientis and Dichagyris truculenta show a less prominent black root welt.
distribution and habitat
The distribution of Dichagyris signifera ranges from Spain and southern France via Switzerland , Italy and Austria through the Balkan countries to the Middle East and Central Asia . In Iran it is represented by the subspecies Dichagyris signifera farsistana ( Brandt , 1938). The species prefers open, warm terrain at altitudes of up to 2500 meters.
Way of life
The moths are nocturnal, fly between July and September, suck nectar from flowers and visit artificial light sources and bait . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of low-growing plants, hide under stones during the day and hibernate.
