Dickson "Dick" Mwangi Wathika (born October 20, 1973 , † December 19, 2015 in Nairobi ) was a Kenyan politician of the Party of National Unity , who was mayor of Nairobi from 2004 to 2008 .

Life

Wathika was elected mayor of Nairobi for the first time in 2004 as a candidate for the Party of National Unity and thus succeeded Joe Aketch. In the local elections in 2006 he was able to defend his mayor's office and held it until he was replaced by Geoffrey Majiwa from the Orange Democratic Movement in 2008.

In the 2007 elections, Wathika was elected a member of the National Assembly for the Party of National Unity in the Makadara constituency. However, his rival candidate and previous MP Reuben Ndolo challenged the election because of numerous irregularities. On April 30, 2010, a court under presiding judge Kalpana Rawal overturned Wathika's election and ruled that he was illegally in office. This made the constituency vacant, so that a by-election was necessary in September 2010 . From this by-election on September 20, 2010, Mbuvi Gidion Kioko Mike Sonko of the National Rainbow Coalition - Kenya (NARC - Kenya) emerged as the winner, who was able to prevail against second-placed Reuben Ndolo and Wathika as third-placed.
