The Thick Oak is located in the Eisenach district of Berteroda .

The thick oak is considered the landmark of Berteroda and has been protected as a natural monument since the 1930s . The tree is a 16 m high "1000 year old" English oak . In 1999 the circumference of the trunk, measured at chest height , was 10.04 meters. Further measurements of the circumference at chest height showed:

year Trunk circumference
1917 000000000000008.50000000008.50 m
1935 000000000000009.00000000009.00 m
1986 000000000000009.90000000009.90 m
1999 000000000000010.040000000010.04 m
2013 000000000000010.060000000010.06 m

The increase in the circumference of the trunk is due to the filling of cavities with stones and casting mortar in 1912, which resulted in a vertical crack and an apparent increase in circumference, so there is no double trunk. Thick and bulging growths in the lower trunk section (bark secretions) also hinder the exact measurement.

In order to strengthen the vitality of these tree veterans , regular controls are carried out on the tree. These are to detect danger spots due to rot spots or fungal attack at an early stage. The root areas of the tree were provisionally protected from possible damage by a picket fence. In the immediate vicinity of the tree there is a small pond and a watercourse, which can balance the water table even in particularly dry summers. The favorable growth conditions for the tree, the protection status that has existed for decades and the cultural significance for the place have allowed this former hat oak to survive to this day. In honor of their honor, the townspeople put a plaque on the trunk:

You oak have been loyal to the village in sorrow and joy for 1000 years.
Berteroda will respect you - with love, diligence and unity. "

At the end of July 2012, a large section of the oak broke off the main trunk.
