The thick tower

The thick tower is a remnant of the city fortifications of Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The round bastion tower made of bricks stands on the grounds of the Stiftisches Gymnasium at the corner of Stürtzstrasse / Altenteich . The tower was built in 1493 and is part of the Düren city wall . It used to have a pointed roof.

The Big Tower was extensively restored in the 1990s because it threatened to collapse. After the war it was filled with rubble and earth. The internal pressure threatened to blow up the walls.

The building is registered under No. 1 / 035a in the list of monuments of the city of Düren.
