Altenteich is a historical street name in the city of Düren ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The street is in the city center within the old city wall . It connects Weierstrasse with Stürtzstrasse . The breakthrough to Stürtzstrasse did not take place until 1906.

The origin of the street goes back almost to the origin of Düren. An arm of the Rur was used to feed the Pfalzgraben . When the city wall was built after 1200, the watercourse was used to feed the city moats. Later the barrel was further regulated and used to drive mills . This watercourse was now called the New Pond and the previous course was called the Old Pond (Altenteich) . The bed of this pond ran empty and was sold as building land.

The street was first mentioned in 1378 as up dem alden dyche . In 1655/56 a Capuchin monastery was built here. After the secularization of 1802 it served secular purposes. The town bought it in 1820 and converted it into a grammar school . From 1891 to 1904 the grammar school moved to Zehnhofstrasse. On May 3, 1904, the Stiftisches Gymnasium was inaugurated at its current location on Altenteich.

At the corner of Weierstrasse and Altenteich is the listed Anna column . Further architectural monuments in the street can be found in the list of architectural monuments in Düren . Most of them are remnants of the city fortifications from the Middle Ages . The distinctive Gewandhaus stood in the northern part of the street at the corner of Steinweg .
