The thick-headed (Pachycephalidae), also called the thick-headed flycatcher, form a family in the order of the passerine birds (Passeriformes). Stubborn heads are found in Australia , Tasmania , New Guinea , Indonesia , the Philippines and in the south of Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar , Bangladesh and West Bengal , as well as on the islands of the tropical, western Pacific from the Solomon Islands to Tonga .
features
Dick-headed birds are small to medium-sized birds, usually with brownish or gray plumage. However, some species also show high-contrast plumage with black, white or yellow areas. Females are usually less contrasty in color. The bird's head is relatively large and round, the neck is short and thick. The beak is strong and short to medium in length. The wings and tail are of medium length, the legs are short, the feet are small.
Habitat and way of life
Stubborn heads live mainly in forests, in Australia also in open bushland. They feed mainly on insects and other invertebrates, as well as fruits. Larger species (genus Colluricincla ) also prey on small frogs or lizards. Colluricincla species look for food primarily on the ground, Pachycephala species catch insects in the air or look for them in branches. The bowl-shaped nests, made of twigs, grass, bark, leaves and other fine material, are placed in a fork of branches, on the ground, in bushes or shrubs or on a ledge. Two to three eggs are laid in the nests. In most of the species examined so far, females and males take part in nest building, breeding and feeding of the young birds. The brood lasts 15 to 19 days and the young birds leave the nest after 10 to 12 days. After that, they are fed by their parents for a period of up to two months.
