action

Commissioner Montalbano is investigating the death of a senior Sicilian politician who apparently died of heart failure while visiting an open-air brothel. At first, however, Montalbano does not believe in a natural cause of death and, in the course of the investigation, finds clues that a young Swede, Ingrid Sjöström, was involved in the matter. It turns out, however, that the references to her involvement (the discovery of a piece of jewelry and a bag with her initials at the crime scene) were fabricated in order to link her father-in-law, also a politician, to the crime.

Although Montalbano is finally able to solve the case and finds out that the deceased actually died due to natural circumstances (namely during a sexual adventure with his nephew) and the involvement of a political companion in the affair, his investigations have no judicial consequences. After the said nephew learns of the machinations surrounding the death of the beloved uncle, he murders the person responsible and then takes his own life.

The title of the book refers to a childhood story of the dead widow. Montalbano tells this about a friend from childhood who once asked her about the "shape of water". Her answer was that water does not have a shape of its own, but always takes the shape you give it. With this parable she expresses her belief in the involvement of her husband's party political opponents, who try to use the circumstances of death for their own purposes.
