The heroine Felicitas Wessel comes from a family of actors and is planning a career in this profession for herself and travels to Berlin to audition. When she courted Heinrich Andreesen, she even refused to work with Max Reinhardt . The Andreesens are a long-established Bremen family whose business is coffee roasting.

The wedding took place against the resistance of Heinrich's mother. Felicitas had a difficult time in the family, especially in the first few years of her marriage.

The reader is taken into the world of the coffee trade and experiences a trip to the coffee plantations in Brazil with the young couple. The characters in the novel come from very different milieus: Heinrich's friend, Bernhard Servatius, is an artist and brings Felicitas closer to his world. Heinrich's sister Ella moves through the poor areas of the city, which are vividly described in the novel, without the family's knowledge.

The East Prussian branch of the Wessel family also plays an important role. Felicitas' cousins live on an estate and have great difficulty finding their way around the world.

The novel describes the development of the heroine Felicitas in dealing with various influences.

There is a sequel to the novel: The Legacy of the Coffee Princess.
