Content and background
The Senator's Sons is the story of an inheritance dispute between two senator's sons over their father's garden, which is on the edge of a small northern German port town. The merchants Christian Albrecht Jovers (who is also a senator to succeed his father of the same name) and Friedrich Jovers live in neighboring townhouses without a garden and cannot agree on the inheritance. In anger, the younger brother Friedrich had a high wall built between the townhouses, which was a topic of conversation throughout the city. Ultimately, the story ends in a conciliatory way.
Storm took the plot of the novella from the family history of his maternal ancestors. The sons of Storm's great-great-grandfather, Mayor Simon Woldsen (1696–1765) in Husum , got into a dispute over an abandoned garden that lasted until the end of their lives.
Storm dedicated this novella to his friend and correspondent Wilhelm Petersen .
