The city (Heym)

The poem "Die Stadt" by Georg Heym , published in 1911, is a sonnet that deals with the subject of the big city, an emerging danger and the anonymity of people. It is assigned to expressionism .

The sonnet consists of two quartets , followed by two thirds . The metrical foot is a fünfhebiger iambic blunt cadence , the rhyme scheme is

[abba caac ddd eee].

In the first quartet, a city not discussed in detail is shown at night. The second quartet is about the anonymity of the people in a city. In the first trio, life is described and attention is drawn to its monotonous rhythm. The second deals with the well-known dangers of a city, in this case fire.
