The Towers of February (in the original: De torens van februari ) is a diary novel by the Dutch author Tonke Dragt from 1973.

content

One day an adolescent boy finds himself on a beach. He doesn't know who he is, where he comes from, his watch has stopped, he has lost all orientation. A ship is anchored in the distance. Human footprints lead straight out of the sea, but he doesn't know whether they come from himself. His gaze falls on two towers nearby that frighten him, but which he also feels magically attracted to. On the way there he meets an old man who speaks to the confused boy. When he hears that the boy has apparently lost his memory, he advises him to write everything down, as memories might come back. The man named Alva is a scientist who studies psychic phenomena. Alva is the first of a series of further enigmatic encounters: there is Jan, a dune guardian, the girl Teja, a dog who always runs around alone. In his pocket is a small notebook with enigmatic drawings and handwriting that he cannot read. From now on he writes everything that he observes or that frightens him in his diary, although Teja advises him not to think about the past. The first entry is on February 30th, the next on February 31st. Once he holds the notebook in front of a mirror and realizes that it is written in mirror writing, in which he recognizes his own handwriting. So his real name is Tom Wit, and he's from another world.

shape

The book is written as a diary that the writer allegedly sent the author Tonke Dragt with the request that it be published. Tonke Dragt only appears as the editor of the original text, which she only checked for spelling errors without changing the text itself.
