The Terrorist is a political novel by British author and Nobel Prize laureate Doris Lessing . It was published in English in the fall of 1985 under the original title The Good Terrorist in the United Kingdom and the United States. The German-language edition was published in 1986 in a translation by Manfred Ohl and Hans Sartorius.

The protagonist of the novel, Alice Mellings, is a 36-year-old woman, a daughter from a middle-class family, who is drawn into the terrorist milieu of the IRA through unfortunate circumstances .

For years Alice has been the good soul of her London flat-sharing community, who cleans, cooks and even steals for her roommates who are constantly demonstrating, but remains unaffected by their revolutionary phrases and ideological plans. The encounter with a new, opaque comrade sets an unstoppable process in motion, in the course of which the selfless, good woman of the original title becomes a disturbed, mentally lost accomplice in a bomb attack .
