Measuring the woman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The measurement of women , subtitle: From botox , hormones and other insanity , is a non-fiction book published in 2013 by the Swiss historian and political scientist Regula Stämpfli .

content

The book deals in 15 chapters (including our daily weighing give us today - 500 years of philosophy history or my body - my religion ) with what Stämpfli calls a “dictate of beauty” for perfection in and of women .

From a cultural-philosophical point of view, Regula Stämpfli describes the optimization mania with regard to the body as a phenomenon of modernity and capitalism , particularly blatantly through the “American prostitute culture”, which has successfully contributed to sub-proletarian gender stereotypes for a few years. In their analysis, various aspects of evolutionary biology , brain research , political philosophy and economic theory are linked. The author endeavors to supplement existing feminist theories with newer research. The book tells how the whole world becomes more and more of a number. This is particularly evident in people: from the "cradle to the barcode " everything is recorded, measured and evaluated.

success

The first edition of 5,000 copies was sold out after five months. In Switzerland, the book was number 5 on the Swiss bestseller list for four weeks in September 2013.

Reviews

  • According to the Austrian journalist Guido Tartarotti, Stämpfli pleads in her book "for a pleasurable, non-norm-oriented way of dealing with oneself. May they be heard."
  • Tabea Grzeszyk in Deutschlandradio Kultur : "Regula Stämpfli warns urgently with" Die Vermessung der Frau "of a world in which physical deviations are not tolerated." At the same time, Tabea Grzeszyk also criticizes the fact that the "complex topic of biopolitics" is presented in an "understandable" way, but "sometimes too template-like and undifferentiated". "All too stereotypical generalizations about" the hooker figure Barbie "or the imputed" wish for the perfect uniform cunt "" do not do justice to the diverse realities of women in the 21st century [...] in the opinion of Grzeszyk. "
  • Melanie Mühl, FAZ , described the measurement of women as an "important book". Stämpfli was "undisputedly right" with her theses, "but a little less anger, a little less black-and-white painting and the renunciation of terms such as" the hooker figure Barbie "would have given her request a lot more impact."
  • Patrick Etschmayer in News.ch (July 5, 2013): "In a poster world full of size-zero models threatened by starvation, she discusses how we can learn again to find our own desires and our own beauty."
  • Bettina Weber in the Tages-Anzeiger (June 11, 2013): "The Bernese political scientist Regula Stämpfli has written a new book. In it, she explains an evil called« measuring women »- and the world itself."
  • Oliver Steffen in TalkTaily (June 20, 2013): "This is an indictment against everyone who does not swim against, but with the flow."
