The lost fleet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Die Verschollene Flotte ( The Lost Fleet ) is a series of novels about a space opera by the American author John G. Hemry alias Jack Campbell, which tells the story of a battle fleet that was cut off in enemy territory based on the anabasis .

backgrounds

In an unspecified future, several large human star nations have formed.

The Alliance and its allies

In addition to the Alliance, there are two smaller star nations that are among the Alliance's allies: The Rift Federation and the Callas Republic . They are essentially democratic and have all the characteristics of a democratic state structure: elections, a democratically elected government and individual rights.

The earth is also connected to the infrastructure of the Alliance, although it has not recovered from earlier times and wars and therefore does not play a decisive role. It has also been demilitarized and neutral for centuries.

The Syndicate Worlds

The syndicate worlds (often referred to as syndics ) show signs of a dictatorial state structure with a large number of large companies , the influence of which, however, remains unclear. The institutions of the Syndicate Worlds include internal security organizations and a military that is also supposed to suppress civil unrest.

Alien races

The most common alien race is the Enigma , whose appearance is unknown. As far as contact could be made, they always used artificially generated images of people to communicate. From the Alliance's point of view, they live behind the territory of the Syndicate Worlds and are the true inventors of hyperspace technology.

In the eighth volume, the Allianz fleet meets two other alien races, the bear cows and the spider wolves , and is drawn into their conflict.

The war

The war that forms the background of the novel series has been going on for 100 years at the time of the plot. Capt. John Geary fought the Syndics in the first battle - the Battle of Grendel . However, the surprise attack was repulsed by the Alliance . During the war there were short phases of the armistice , but the fighting flared up again afterwards. Heavy losses on both sides and war crimes mark the background of the desperate enterprise that has led the Allianz fleet into the syndic room.

technology

Spaceships in the novel series are able to reach a tenth of the speed of light with conventional propulsion. Warships can also accelerate up to twice as much. Higher speeds would be possible, but are not used because the "relativistic" disturbances that occur can no longer be compensated for in a meaningful way by the ship's systems and would render the ships unable to maneuver. There is also the jump drive, which enables spaceships to jump from jump points in one star system to jump points in another star system. The jump drive has an unnamed, technical maximum range of light years that it can jump over. In addition, time passes during the jump. Short jumps take a few days, longer weeks.

The hyperspace gates connect star systems with one another. However, the author does not provide any technical details here.

Faith

In the novel series itself, instead of the monotheism of the now ancestor worship represented as practiced religion.

Acts of the novels

Fearless

Feartlos (English original title Dauntless ) is the first novel in the series and was published on November 9, 2010 by Bastei Lübbe Verlag .

The novel begins without depicting the past in the home star system of the syndicate worlds. The fleet of the Alliance and its allies was to end the war, which had now been going on for a hundred years, with one decisive blow. Instead, the vanguard was wiped out and the escape of the decimated main force seems hopeless. The fleet commander leaves his flagship to negotiate with the syndic commanders, so he hands over command of the fleet to Capt. John Geary (nickname Black Jack ). Capt. Geary manages to escape from the syndicate's home system with almost the entire fleet. On the run, the Alliance fleet is confronted with both pursuers and a syndicate trap.

In the next star system of the Syndicate Worlds, the Alliance fleet first tries to repair its damage and replenish its supplies. Shortly afterwards, however, another chase force from the Syndics arrives. This time there is a battle between the two fleets, with the Alliance's fleet wiping out those of the Syndics completely.

Black jack

Black Jack (original title Fearless ) is the second volume of the novel series and was published by Bastei-Lübbe on February 4, 2011.

After defeating a Syndic fleet at the end of Fearless, the Alliance fleet reaches a new star system and finds a POW camp on a habitable planet. The successful liberation of the prisoners of war is clouded shortly afterwards. One of the freed prisoners of war (Capt. Falco, actually English Fighting Falco ) becomes the figurehead for a mutiny of 39 ships against Geary.

Geary meanwhile leads his remaining fleet - by turning around and flying deeper into the Syndic area - into the Sancere star system and completely surprises the Syndics there. In heavy fighting, the Syndic defenders destroy a hyperspace gate and almost trigger a catastrophe.

The departure from the Sancere star system also follows the plan to catch up with the mutinous ships and protect them from any pursuers. In the Ilion star system , the Alliance fleet meets the surviving mutineer ships and is able to save them from a syndic chase fleet.

Vanishing point ixion

Vanishing point Ixion as the third novel in the series (English original title Courageous ) was published by Bastei-Lübbe on April 7, 2011.

After their counter-offensive in Sancere , the lost fleet is heading for the Alliance again. But the scarcity of raw materials increases the need for the Allianz fleet to get supplies from the Syndics. Captain Geary sees only one way out, as the Alliance fleet flies to Lakota to shorten the long journey home with the hyperspace gate there. From this hyperspace gate comes a huge force of the Syndicate worlds. With a lot of effort, the Alliance fleet can save itself through the jump point to Ixion . Once in Ixion , Geary decides to turn back to Lakota , faced with a hopeless situation .

Geary's honor

Geary's honor (English original title Valiant ) as the fourth volume was published by Bastei-Lübbe on August 18, 2011.

The return of the almost defeated Allianz fleet to Lakota appears to be a well-calculated risk. Geary and the Alliance fleet manage to survive in heavy battles in the Lakota star system and, among other things, to rescue some survivors from the last battles. However, a syndic force destroys the hyperspace gate with unforeseen consequences for the entire Lakota star system . The missing fleet can continue to fly towards Allianz .

The ambush

The fifth volume Der Hinterhalt (English original title Relentless ) was published by Bastei-Lübbe on November 25, 2011.

After the last battle, the Allianz fleet looks ahead with mixed prospects: supplies are scarce, personnel and materials are exhausted, and many ships are badly damaged. Rescuing prisoners of war from the Allianz fleet again does not lead to any relief. The most serious crises on the journey home follow one another immediately. Betrayal within the Alliance fleet, in which there is no shrinking from murder, and the offensive of the last large syndicate force that threatens to overrun the Alliance defenders of the Alliance / Syndic border near Varandal , demand everything again. Nevertheless, the impossible succeeds.

An expensive victory

An expensive victory (English original title Victorious ) as the sixth volume was published by Bastei-Lübbe on May 18, 2012.

The Alliance pulls together all available forces in Varandal under now Admiral Geary's command and flies with the reinforced fleet in the Syndic home system. There the very last reserves (especially from the Syndik reserve fleet used in volume five) are defeated. The war is over. But now the ENIGMAs also want to take advantage of the collapse of the syndicate. In the Midway system, the ENIGMAs are expected to attack after a threat. The Alliance fleet flies there to avert the danger to humanity. The Alliance fleet returns to Varandal after Midway's rescue .

Beyond the border

Beyond the Border (English original title Dreadnaught ) as the seventh volume of the entire series and first volume of the follow-up series was published by Bastei-Lübbe on January 11, 2013. When Geary returned to Varandal , parts of the Allianz fleet were on the verge of an uprising. After de-escalation, all ships under the designation 1st Fleet are sent behind the Alliance border to negotiate with the ENIGMA breed. The space flight against the ENIGMAs remains largely unsuccessful, but 333 Syndik citizens can be rescued from an ENIGMA prison. During the final jump into an unknown solar system before the trip back to the Alliance, the fleet is ambushed by another unknown alien species.

Half a victory

A half victory (English original title Invincible ) is the eighth volume in the series of novels Die Verschollene Flotte and appeared for the first time in German on April 19, 2013.

Admiral Geary and the Alliance fleet are struggling to free themselves from the ambush of the second alien race (the bear cows) for the journey home. On the way, the Alliance fleet encounters the third alien race (the spider wolves), who appear to be in constant conflict with the second alien race. Upon arrival in the Syndic star system Midway , the protagonists learn of the changes in the government structure there and are asked by a small Syndic fleet to release findings and captured alien ships. The next conflict seems inevitable.

The guards

The Guardian (Engl. Title Guardian ) is the ninth volume of the series of novels and appeared on October 11, 2013.

The Alliance fleet under Admiral Geary drives the Syndics out of the Midway star system after they have tried to claim the massive battleship of an alien race for themselves and recapture it from the Separatists. Accompanied by the spider wolves, the Allianz fleet starts its journey home. However, the Syndics tried several times to stop the fleet. The fleet suffers losses, but in order to maintain the fragile peace, Geary only hits back undercover. Arrived in Varandal , the wolf spiders declare that they have to travel further to earth. The Dauntless then flies to Earth with the six alien ships . On Earth , the reason for the spider wolves to travel becomes clear.

Steadfast

Steadfast (engl. Steadfast ) is the tenth volume of the novel series.

After some trouble in the Sol system, Admiral Geary and the Dauntless crew travel back to Alliance territory where the rest of the First Fleet are waiting. While some ships are busy repatriating Alliance prisoners of war, Geary and a small part of the fleet are supposed to remove citizens of the Syndicate worlds who have fled political unrest from the Alliance area. Due to the ongoing disarmament after the end of the war, he faces a huge problem. In particular, the forces of a rogue Syndicate star system are hindering him and endangering the Alliance's border region. With great effort he succeeds in stabilizing the border region and carrying out his mission. Back in Varandal , the spider wolves want to return to their homeland. The journey to Midway is peaceful. On the return journey, the Allianz fleet clashes for the first time with unknown ships that attack both Syndicate and Alliance forces. However, these automatic ships belong to a secretly built fleet of the Alliance.

AI uprising

Uprising of the AI (English Leviathan ) is the eleventh volume in the novel series.

The action begins immediately after the tenth volume. The First Fleet destroys the surviving automated ships in Varandal that have so far attacked two solar systems. In the course of the near future the circumstances of the current crisis will become more and more clear. A secret program to defend the Alliance has gotten out of hand and threatens to destabilize the Alliance. The First Fleet managed to avoid a trap for the time being. The only way to end the crisis is to destroy the home base of the automated fleet in the Unity Analog star system .

Continuation / further development of the series

The series The Lost Fleet was developed further by the novel series Beyond the Frontier , which dealt with the further fate of the Alliance and John Gearys. The Lost Stars deals with the collapsing structures of the Syndicate worlds , but especially with the further developments in the Midway star system. From 2016, a trilogy The First Stars will also deal with the creation of the alliance. [outdated]

The lost stars

Since October 2012, a parallel plot ( The Lost Stars ) about the post-war order of the syndicate worlds in the Midway star system has been introduced. From 2016, another series of novels will deal with the origins of the alliance.

The former CEOs of the Syndicate Worlds Iceni and Drakon declare the independence of Midway and try to maintain a stable order in the maelstrom of the sinking Syndicate worlds. They do not shy away from military actions against armed forces of the syndicate worlds and actively intervene in the civil wars raging on some worlds.
