Dieter Hanelt (born September 1, 1960 ) is a German biologist and professor for aquatic ecophysiology and phycology at the University of Hamburg .

Career

Dieter Hanelt graduated from the Philipps University of Marburg with a diploma in biology in 1987 and received his doctorate there in 1990. From 1990 to 1994 he worked as a research associate in the Antarctic Research focus and in the Ecophysiology Collaborative Research Center of the German Research Foundation at the University of Marburg. From 1994 to 1996 he worked as a research assistant at the Biological Institute Helgoland (BAH) and from 1996 to 1998 in the EU project UV-Effects on Marine Macrophytes at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven. In 1998 he completed his habilitation at the University of Bremen and received the Venia Legendifor botany. From 1999 to 2003 he was in charge of the marine botany department and guest research at the Biological Institute Helgoland. In 2003 he received a professorship for aquatic ecophysiologist at the University of Hamburg, as well as the management of the Hamburg algae culture collection (MZCH). Dieter Hanelt has been CEO of the German Society for Marine Research since 2017 .

Research priorities

Hanelt has the following main research areas:

  • Photosynthetic regulation in aquatic, photoautotrophic organisms
  • Industrial biomass production of micro and macro algae for biotechnological use
  • Wastewater treatment by means of algae and bacterial biozoenoses
  • Ecophysiological adaptation / stress physiology and biogeography of aquatic, photoautotrophic organisms,
  • Identification and evolution of the Zygnematophyceae
  • Device and method development for biotechnological applications.
