Dieter Heinzig

Dieter Heinzig (born June 6, 1932 in Burkhardtsdorf ) is a German historian of China and Eastern Europe.

Life

After studying Sinology and Japanese Studies for two years at the Humboldt University (East Berlin), he was forcibly de-registered for political reasons in 1954 and went to West Germany. He studied the history of China, the history of Eastern Europe and law at the Universities of Hamburg, Kiel, Cologne and Bochum and was awarded a doctorate in 1977 with a dissertation on Soviet-Chinese relations in the 1920s at the University of Bochum. phil. PhD. From 1962 to 1964 he was a research assistant at the Department of Politics, Society and Law of Eastern Europe at the University of Kiel, from 1962 to 1997 research assistant at the Federal Institute for Eastern and International Studies in Cologne (BIOst), most recently as deputy director and head of the Asia department. During this time he worked several times as a lecturer at the University of Cologne on topics of international relations in Asia. From 1973 to 1999 he was deputy chairman of the German Society for Asian Studies e. V. (Hamburg).
