Dieter Hoppe (chemist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dieter Hoppe (* 1941 in Berlin ) is a German chemist ( organic chemistry ) who is a professor at the University of Münster .

biography

Hoppe did an apprenticeship as a laboratory technician in Hanover from 1958 to 1960 before he began studying chemistry. He received his doctorate in 1970 under Ulrich Schöllkopf at the University of Göttingen (on the synthesis of amino acids with metalated alpha- isocyanic acid esters) and completed his habilitation in 1977 in Göttingen. In his habilitation, he dealt with metalated nitrogen derivatives of carboxylic acids in organic synthesis (building blocks for penicillin and cephalosporin frameworks). He then worked for Robert B. Woodward at Harvard in 1977/78 . He was a private lecturer and from 1983 professor in Göttingen. In 1985 he became full professor and institute director in Kiel and in 1992 professor in Münster. In 2006 he retired.

He developed new methods of enantioselective synthesis, especially the preparation and application of chiral 1-oxyallyl, 1-oxybenzyl, 1-oxyalkyl, 1-thioallyl and indenyl anions in homo- aldol reactions . He dealt with asymmetric deprotonation reactions using chiral bases like (-) - sparteine , synthesis of dipeptide isosteres and other potentially biologically active substances, N- sulfonyl-1,3- oxazolidines as chiral templates and their use in the synthesis of natural products.

From 1997 to 2008 he was spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center 424 Molecular Orientation and its Function in Chemical Systems . In 2001 he received the Adolf von Baeyer Medal , in 1999 the Max Planck Research Prize for International Cooperation and in 1993 the Otto Bayer Prize .

From 1988 to 2000 he was editor of Synthesis .
