Dietrich I./III. (Kleve)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dietrich I./III. (* around 1070; † before 1120) is documented as Count of Kleve between 1092 and 1117 . While he was in older research as Dietrich III. (sometimes also called Dietrich II.), he is counted as Dietrich I. in the more recent research based on Kraus.

Life

Dietrich is mentioned in 1092 as comes Thiedericus de Cleve . This makes him the first count to expressly name himself after the Kleve Castle, which gave the family its name . Occasionally he also calls himself "Graf von Tomburg ". In 1094/95 he was mentioned as Vogt of the Brauweiler Monastery near Cologne , in 1117 as Vogt of the Zyfflich Monastery together with his son and later successor Arnold . Since Arnold appears as Count von Kleve in 1120, Dietrich must have passed away by this time.
