Dietrich I. (Holland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dietrich I. Graf in Friesland († probably 939) was the founder of the Dutch line of counts.

He was probably the son and successor of Count Gerolf, who ruled in West Friesland (see Gerulf von Kennemerland ). His brother was Walger Graf von Tiesterband .

For a long time he was a loyal supporter of his liege lord, King Charles the Simple . As a reward he received the church of Egmond on June 15, 922 , along with many goods in the area, in what is now North Holland (between Suithardeshaghe and Fortrapa and Kinnem ). This later became the Egmond Monastery .

He was married to Geva (* around 895), the daughter of Meginhard von Hamalant (* around 860). His successor (son or likely grandson) was Dietrich II.

Later he joined the uprising of the Dukes of Lorraine against King Ludwig and was probably killed in 939 in the Battle of Breisach .
