Dietrich Speckhewer (* around 1578 in Aachen ; † April 1666 in Aachen) was a German lay judge and mayor of the imperial city of Aachen .

Live and act

The son of Johann Speckhewer and Barbara von Berg completed a law degree with a lic. Jur. After completing his studies, he joined the buck guild, in which most of the scholars were organized. Speckhewer was appointed as a representative of the guilds in 1619/20 (with Joachim Berchem as mayor of lay judges), 1622/23, 1624/25, 1626/27, 1628/29 (each with Albrecht Schrick ) and 1633/34, 1637/38 1640 / 41 (each time again with Joachim Berchem) elected "Mayor". After Speckhewer had been accepted into the jury on July 21, 1640, he resigned prematurely from the office of mayor. In his case, the election to this body did not come about through the membership of an ancestor in the lay judge's chair, which was otherwise customary, but was based on his convincing legal abilities and on his family ties to other lay judge families. At the same time he joined the star guild, the association of Aachen lay judges, and was elected mayor of lay judges from among their ranks for the term of office 1650/1651.

The highlight of his first term as mayor was the official representation of the city of Aachen and the handing over of the coronation insignia on the occasion of the imperial coronation of Ferdinand II on September 9, 1619 in Frankfurt am Main .

In addition to his office as mayor, Speckheuer was elected lay judge of the Sendgericht and in 1622/1623 he was head of cabbage. In addition, he was a member of the Sacrament Brotherhood of St. Foillan from 1619 and was several times provisional at the old Hungarian chapel at Aachen Cathedral . On December 11, 1665, half a year before his death, the city of Aachen appointed him forester and although Speckhewer renounced this office, the council decreed that he should hold this office for life.

Speckhewer coat of arms at the Karlsbrunnen

Dietrich Speckhewer was first married to Sibylla Feuerpfeil, who gave birth to the daughter and later wife of the mayor Gerhard Schörer Maria Speckhewer. In his second marriage, Speckheuer married Cäcilia von Beeck, with whom he had a son and successor in the jury's chair, Johann Adam Speckhewer (1627–1662). Speckhewer died in 1666 and, according to the burial register of the Alexianergenossenschaft, reached the age of 88 years. A coat of arms engraving on the bowl of the Aachener Karlsbrunnen on the market square, which was cast during his first term in office in 1620, commemorates him .
