The Karlsbrunnen , also market fountain , is located on the market in Aachen directly in front of the Aachen town hall .

The Karlsbrunnen is the oldest fountain in the city. From 1620 he was crowned with a figure of Charlemagne , which was cast in Dinant . When the French marched in 1792, the statue of Charles was taken to Paris as spoils of war , but was recovered in 1804 through successful negotiations with the incumbent Mayor Johann Wilhelm Gottfried von Lommessem from Aachen and was ceremoniously erected again a year later. The original figure has been in the coronation hall of the town hall since 1969 and the Charles Fountain itself was equipped with an imitation.

The six-ton bronze bowl with a diameter of 3.60 m is called Eäzekomp in Aachen dialect . This term is ambiguous. It can be derived from ore or translated with a pea bowl . According to the inscription, it was cast around 1620 by the Aachen bell founders Franz and Peter von Trier with the support of the external bell caster Daniel Laner (Lonner). On its outer band, between flower garlands with sea creatures, the imperial eagle and the Aachen city coat of arms, there are alternating six water-spouting lion heads and just as many coats of arms. These can be attributed to the honored mayors Joachim Berchem , Albrecht Schrick , Dietrich Speckhewer , Egidius Bleyenheuft and Johann Schörer , who held office during this period, as well as the citizen Peter Brunnenstein.

The Aachen builder Johann Joseph Couven designed the bluestone basin in 1735 . Three years later, Couven added the two bronze fish to the bluestone pool. Since the Karlsbrunnen was designed as an ornamental fountain, Couven designed two small running fountains in 1736, from which the citizens of Aachen could draw water. These were in the immediate vicinity of the Karlsbrunnen. The three wells were supported by the so-called market water pipe, which u. a. also in its further course the Hotmannspief supplied the Pau with water . During the Second World War , the well was dismantled to prevent it from being damaged by the war. In 1948 the fountain was reassembled. Historical photographs show that the figure of Charles originally faced south, i.e. the town hall. Today, however, the figure has its back to the town hall. When the face of the statue is viewed in this arrangement, the town hall forms the background.
