Diferencia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A diferencia (Spanish; "diversity") is a name for a variation in Spanish instrumental music of the 16th century and later. It can be a variation on a folk or dance melody, but also on a Gregorian chant melody .

The term Diferencia appears for the first time in a tablature by Luis de Narváez (* around 1505, † after 1549) in the four-part compositions Diferencia sobre “Guardame las vacas” and Tres diferencias por otra parte , in his collection Los seys libros del Delphín de música de cifras para tañer Vihuela (published in Valladolid 1538). The composer of Diferencias is primarily Antonio de Cabezón , in his work "Obras de música" (published in Madrid 1578). Other composers besides Cabezón and Narváez are Luis Venegas de Henestrosa with his collection Libro de cifra nueva (published by Alcalá de Henares 1557) and Diego Ortiz with his work Tratado de glosas ( Rome 1553).
