Diego Ortiz
Diego Ortiz (* around 1510 , according to other sources 1525 in Toledo , † around 1570 in Naples ) was a Spanish composer .
From 1553 on he worked at the viceroyal court in Naples . Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba appointed him his Kapellmeister (Maestro de Capilla) . Even under his successor Pedro Afán de Ribera he can be traced back to this post in 1565.
His publications consist of the collection of sacred music , the Musices liber primus (Venice 1565), and a treatise of particular value on playing the viola da gamba , the Tratado de Glosas sobre cláusulas y Otros Géneros de Puntos en La Música de Violones (Rome 1553). This is a remarkable source of Renaissance - ornaments and improvised practice. His techniques led to the English divisions on a ground and the improvised viola bastarda style.
