Diffuse X-ray spectrometer
The Diffuse X-ray Spectrometer (DXS) was an experiment on the STS-54 mission of the Space Shuttle Endeavor from January 13-19, 1993 . It recorded spectra of the diffuse sky background in X-ray light.
DXS was developed by the University of Wisconsin , Madison . Two crystal spectrometers working on the principle of Bragg reflection recorded spectra in the energy range 148 to 284 eV , the angular resolution was 15 °. From the spectra of DXS it was concluded that a hot gas of around one million Kelvin in the solar environment ( local bubble ) is not yet in thermal equilibrium and was probably generated by a supernova explosion in the last million years.
