Digi-Key is a distributor of electronic components, modules and evaluation boards based in Thief River Falls ( Minnesota , USA ). The company is the eighth largest distributor of electronic components worldwide. The company is also very popular among amateur electronics enthusiasts , as it does not just deliver to companies , as is the case with many other wholesalers , but also to private individuals.

Companies

The company was founded in 1972 by Ronald Stordahl, the name being derived from a kit he designed for radio amateurs , the "digital electronic keyer kit".

After Mark Larson became managing director in 1976, he structured Digi-Key from a provider of hobby electronics to a general distributor.

In 1996 the website went online with the option to order online.

From 1997 deliveries also to Canada, followed by Japan in 2002 and Great Britain in 2003. Germany, France and other European countries have been supplied since 2004, Singapore, China and other Asian countries from 2005.

In 2011 Digi-Key announced that it would discontinue its printed catalog and only offer its products online in the future.

In a 2007 EE Times survey, Digi-Key ranks first in the overall performance category of 200 participating distributors for 16 years.

Digi-Key has a centralized office in Thief River Falls. Their storage capacities are 180,000 m² and employ 2,400 people there. It is shipped to over 170 countries and over 500,000 different products from more than 470 manufacturers are in stock.
