Digital Extended Broadcasting

Digital Extended Broadcasting (DXB) is a system concept that is being developed as part of the BMBF research project 3GET . The aim is to link the already established digital broadcast services ( DAB and DVB-T or DVB-H ) and the UMTS mobile service . The user should be able to be offered a multimedia broadcast service at any time regardless of its current reception options via one of the networks. The source coding must be designed in such a way that the data can be transmitted in all networks without being recoded . This should probably be made possible via a common IP layer ( IP Datacast), via which IP services can be transmitted to the various broadcast networks via corresponding interfaces. IP Datacast is already provided for with DVB-H.

The currently frequently described DMB standard , a multimedia service based on DAB , is not based on IP and therefore does not fit into this concept in its current form. Instead, a corresponding adaptation of DAB is worked out in the DXB project (eDAB = extended DAB), which is then to be proposed for DAB standardization. Optimizations for the transmission of multimedia services to mobile subscribers via DAB are also being examined (techniques for robust reception and energy-saving data transmission such as DVB-H ).

The combination of UMTS and broadcasting services enables the use of interactive services and also the reception (decryption) of commercial services. The success of DXB depends crucially on the business models behind it, which, however, are not part of the DXB project.
