The digital further education campus is a central platform for technically supported teaching and learning as well as for knowledge management in Baden-Württemberg . The education providers include companies as well as state and private education providers . The infrastructure of the digital further education campus allows the common use and exchange of digital learning content.

Structure of further training in Baden-Württemberg

Smaller institutions can no longer meet the requirements of digitization in terms of financial resources, technology, data protection and legal protection. The digital further education campus promotes the preservation of the smaller educational institutions, who can open up new target groups and addressees outside their region with digital offers. Digital knowledge enables people with restricted mobility to better participate in social and cultural life. Job seekers have better chances of being reintegrated into working life after a break from work.

Conception

The digital further education campus has been set up since 2015 by vimotion GmbH in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport of the State of Baden-Württemberg as part of the Alliance for Lifelong Learning. It is currently used by more than 100 companies, training institutions, libraries and associations. It is based on the ILIAS learning platform . This platform has been expanded to include additional tools and applications for learning and knowledge management. For example, OpenMeetings (virtual classrooms), Xmpp (chat), simulations, ReST (interface) and license managers have been added. This means that knowledge can be documented, structured and used in a targeted manner. There are also opportunities for mutual exchange and informal learning that allow cooperation and networking between the participating institutions. The use of the digital further education campus can be individualized and adapted to the respective educational provider. Under certain conditions, the use of the platform is funded by the state. Aware that it is not the people who are there for the technology, but the technology for the people, the digital further education campus was included in the basic paper of the digitization strategy of the state of Baden-Württemberg.

Project examples

In the meantime, a number of projects have been implemented with the infrastructure of the digital training campus.

Smartphones (Volkshochschulverband Baden-Württemberg) and tablet PCs are used very naturally and in a variety of ways by many, especially younger people. Older people, on the other hand, are still somewhat reserved when it comes to mobile devices, even though these devices offer a wide range of opportunities to participate and make everyday life easier. The aim of the Smartphone4BestAger project is therefore to introduce this target group to mobile devices and to show their added value, especially for older people. Corresponding online teaching material for the 55+ target group has also been developed for the two most common operating systems Android and iOS (Apple).

The city libraries in Bietigheim-Bissingen, Göppingen / Geislingen, Heilbronn and Karlsruhe have expanded their offerings: since the end of March 2015, all four libraries have been offering individualized online learning platforms on the digital further education campus. The Ludwigsburg City Library was a pioneer in matters of learning at the click of a mouse. Their learning platform was launched in July 2013. Examples of eLearning in libraries, implemented on the digital further education campus:

  • Heilbronn
  • Stuttgart
  • Karlsruhe
  • Goeppingen
  • Bietigheim
  • Ludwigsburg

Model project live online German courses for refugees in Baden-Württemberg libraries: If refugees learn German as quickly as possible, this promotes their integration into society and especially into the job market. However, the range of face-to-face courses on site is often insufficient, or the courses are overcrowded and therefore ineffective. A model project is therefore taking place in seven libraries in Baden-Württemberg (Achern, Heilbronn, Konstanz, Nordheim, Reutlingen, Stuttgart and Tübingen) that is intended to give immigrants faster and more effective access to the German language: Refugees can use PC learning stations at an online -Take a German course in the so-called virtual classroom. The lecturer, a trained language teacher, is specially trained for this type of teaching. Participants at different locations are brought together to form an online learning group. The language students have direct contact with the lecturer via headsets, can ask questions at any time and improve their pronunciation. To complement the learning offer, videos for learning German are also provided on the library computers. The software for the virtual classroom, which is also part of the digital further education campus, comes from vitero GmbH.

Digital return to work - blended learning in action at the Federal Employment Agency

The Ministry of Finance and Economics, together with the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs of Baden-Württemberg, offers online training advice in chat at certain times via its training portal. The chat of the digital further education campus is used so that all functions of the platform are available within the advisory process (wiki, glossary, information and content, etc.). In addition to written communication in chat, there is also the option of switching to audio communication directly and without access to additional software. Outside of the chat hours and if the chat room is occupied because of an ongoing consultation, the question can be sent in writing to the advisory team using an online form.

ESRA - e-learning for schoolchildren on the verge of schoolability: The ESRA project was based on the special educational approach, pupils with negative school experiences and with social and emotional needs through learning in the virtual classroom instead of in a class group to concentrate on school content and ultimately to enable a school leaving certificate.

Virtual viewing of images - art that comes to the viewer: The aim of this project is to enable residents of retirement, retirement or nursing homes to be guided through museums despite mobile restrictions.
